Air compressor systems and industrial pumps are two components that play a pivotal role in the process industry by enabling movement of air or fluids.

Used in a vast array of industrial processes and across a diverse range of applications, both pneumatic and hydraulic energy are considered as critical operational resources.

Utilising similar mechanical technologies, including dynamic centrifugal and axial designs, as well as displacement designs involving rotary screws and reciprocation, pumps and compressors share key characteristics; both increase pressure, which is then used to transport the relevant medium between locations or processes.

Applications typically include pneumatically or hydraulically driven valves and cylinders found in manufacturing machinery, along with a variety of hand tools such as drills, wrenches, hammers and saws. They are also widely used for processing major commodities such as cereals, food, pharmaceuticals, gas and oil, as well as being a major resource within the building and construction industries.

However, both technologies require enormous amounts of energy, and are subject to stringent legislative controls for safe and efficient operational performance with constant examination of energy and exergy efficiencies, along with constant scrutiny of CO2 emissions during the design process.
